Mindful awareness can teach you how to manage stress by becoming more aware of how you navigate through life — physically, emotionally and intellectually – helping to cultivate individuals that are happy, resilient and compassionate.

CALMING THE TROUBLED MIND

In today’s modern world – “busyness” can often overtake us. We end up spending a lot of time ruminating over things that haven’t gone well in the past and worrying about all the jobs that we need to do in the future. Our minds can end up being extremely busy and often we do not have enough tools in our tool box of life to help us deal with this. This 6 session course will aim to equip you with mindfulness tools to help you to calm your mind and to find stillness.

In group sessions of 2 ½ hours over six weeks we will:
  • Provide an introductory experience of mindfulness which is both relevant and applicable to our busy modern lives.

  • Look at how mindfulness can assist us in dealing with the stressful aspects of daily living as well as how it can support us in discovering increased pleasure and vitality.

  • Explore our reactive patterns of resistance and how we can move into increased acceptance of our thoughts and emotions.

  • Find ways of enhancing our positive mental states including the practice of kindly awareness.

  • Look at what is truly important for each of us and the choices we can make to create a meaningful life.

The course is based on a multi-dimensional approach which includes some basic meditation practice as well as a range of informal exercises designed to help you explore how you can integrate mindfulness into your life for greater well-being.

MINDFULNESS FOR CHILDREN

MindfulnessNow offers a course in mindfulness for children aged between 9 to 11 years. The course is based on the work of Dr Amy Saltzman and consists of six one hour classes directed to giving the children an understanding and personal experience of mindfulness through age-appropriate activities.

The starting point is to learn what it means “to pay attention to the here and now”. Children are guided in formal practice to bring their awareness initially to their breath and later also to sounds, sensations, thoughts and feelings. Through meditation children can learn how to relax, build concentration and develop the capacity to observe their internal world.

In a practical sense, mindfulness can give a child the skills to calm themselves down when they are angry or upset or nervous, to concentrate and ignore distractions, and to show kindness towards themselves and others. It is about giving a child the opportunity to develop prosocial skills as well as self-esteem and resilience throughout life.

This 6 week, 1 hour course will:
  • Help children through informal practice develop mindfulness in their daily lives.

  • Help children explore their perceptions about themselves and others.

  • Help children examine their thoughts and feelings in regards to both pleasant and unpleasant experiences.

  • Help children begin to develop emotional fluency as well as the capacity to respond rather than react.

  • Assist children to learn new ways of effective communication.
